DEFINITION:
The surgical implantation of a penile prosthesis is suitable to treat any erectile dysfunction problems in those cases in which the chemical treatments are not effective.
DESCRIPTION:
The prosthesis is introduced into the cavernous bodies of the penis by making an incision at the base of the penis, the trunk and the scrotum in lie with the type of prosthesis selected.
The procedure usually takes around 45 minutes and is carried out under local anaesthetic. Generally speaking, you do not have to be hospitalised after the operation.
There are two types of prosthesis, semi-rigid and hydraulic. Semi-rigid prostheses keep the penis rigid the whole time and can be easily handled to change their position. Hydraulic prostheses are formed by a pump, a cylinder and a reservoir. When you press the pump, the liquid passes from the reservoir to the cylinders causing an erection. On releasing the valve, the penis returns to its resting position.
BEFORE THE PROCEDURE:
Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.
Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.
Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.
AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
It is recommended to use a scrotal support and take moderate rest during the first few days after the procedure. Avoid wearing tight clothing and playing sports. It is very important to attend to the wound. Patients must wait for around 6 weeks before having sexual relations.
