DEFINITION:  

Arthrodesis is the irreversible fusing of two or more vertebral bones to eliminate back pain and improve patients stability

DESCRIPTION:

Anterior cervical arthrodesis is a less invasive procedure than the posterior one. It is performed through an incision in the front of the neck through which the intervertebral disc is replaced by implants or the patient's own bone.

Screw-in plates are used to correct  the position of the vertebrae.

Anterior vertebral arthrodesis is performed under general anesthesia and lasts between one and five hours, depending on the difficulty of each case.

Patients should remain in the hospital for at least two or three days after surgery.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.
Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

In general, patients can get up the day after surgery, but they have to be very careful with their movements. They may need a cervical collar for a few days.

For the next two months they must avoid lifting weights, difficult positions, sports, driving, etc.

DEFINITION:

A laminectomy consists of the resection of the posterior arch of a vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and spinal cord caused by injury or by the appearance of a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or a tumor.

DESCRIPTION:

The procedure is performed through an incision in the lumbar area through which the surgeon removes the “foil”, the bony arch at the back of the vertebra that is pressing on the nerve. He may also remove bony spurs and part or all of the intervertebral disc.

The procedure can be performed under general or spinal anesthesia and lasts between one and three hours. Patients should be hospitalised about three days after surgery.
